Rev. Simon Drew is locked out of St. Paul Baptist Church.
June 15, 1902
According to the Boston Globe, Drew had lost the support of approximately one-third of the congregation for his handling of the church’s finances and for preaching “in a southern revival style” that “often aroused his congregation to such a pitch of enthusiasm that they vented their feelings in weird howls.” The dispute is settled for a time, but Drew is forcibly removed from the pulpit a month later. He starts a new church, the Independent Baptist Church, in November 1902.
